Well, Ok, they're big, black, DOG termites...
Keiko, Lucky, and Rusty (RIP.) Keiko's an 80# lab/rottie mix, Lucky's a Lab/Pitt mutt, and Rusty is a 120# Rottie (not Keiko's mom.)
So these people moved in next door with their two dogs. Both mutts, but one looks like it has some Pitt Bull in it and the other looks like a hound.
The little one has an annoying bark (needs careful oiling?) and the other just woofs.
So anyway they're driving our dogs nuts. One hole in the redwood fence later our dogs are next door having a (FRIENDLY!) chat with the other dogs. Rusty is seen coming OUT of their house, having lapped up their water and, probably, eaten their food. (Who says Rotties aren't Alpha dogs?)
We patch up the fence.
Crunch. Another hole later they're having another chat. (it's our dogs digging, not theirs.)
Plywood panels go up over the redwood fence. Does it stop them? Hah! They ate through the panels.
More plywood panels. The guy next door comes over and tells us our dog (Keiko, lab/rott mix) is in his yard. Turns out she jumped the 6' fence.
So we put a lattice "roof" over the fence. Boy, is SHE unhappy! Whine, whine, whine, can't leap the fence any more.
So they dig another hole through the plywood...
This is getting silly, so we think about ways to stop this. maybe cover the fence with chain link... or plant some vertical flagstones along the whole fence...(I know what you're thinking, we'll get to it...)
Before we can accomplish this Keiko decides that the trellis is no big thing, so she jumps the fence again, going THROUGH the trellis. Out come the repairs and nails to reinforce the trellis.
Problem Fixed! On the recommendation of a friend we looked into an electric fence. Turned out the local Orchard Supply had one. We strung the wire along the fence (about two feet away,) plugged the unit in, and watched.
All three dogs walked over to the fence and inspected it, in the manner of most dogs, by gently touching their noses to it. All jerked back, away from the wire. Keiko, being stubborn, took three or four of these little zaps before she got the idea.
How big is the zap? We didn't touch it ourselves, but it wasn't big enough to get even a "Yip!" from any dog. Just a quick retreat when touching a wet doggie nose to the wire.
It was around $30 at Orchard Supply Hardware. Much better than the $500 to replace or armor-plate the fence!
Let's see what Google has to say about this:
